Choosing a sofa that lasts
A sofa is where a home slows down. We spent a season with makers in Småland who still build frames from solid oak, and came back with a few rules for choosing one that lasts.
Start with the frame
A kiln-dried hardwood frame will outlive two or three sets of cushions, which is the part you should expect to replace. Ask how the joints are made, or come and feel them in one of our stores.

Frames rest for a week before upholstery so the oak settles.
Turned legs, finished by hand.
Then the seat
Feather-wrapped foam gives the sink of down with the recovery of foam. Sit for ten minutes, not ten seconds, and lean back the way you actually do at home.
Finally the fabric
Linen softens, wool hides wear, and both can be cleaned with little more than water. See the full range in our sofas.
